John Peter Nettl (1926- 68)

Author of the leading biography, Rosa Luxemburg (1966), first published in English and since translated into many languages. Nettl was born in Vienna, but lived in England from 1936. After serving with British army intelligence during the Second World War, he studied at Oxford. He died in a plane crash in the United States in 1968.

Paul Frölich (1884- 1953)

Author of the first academic biography of Rosa Luxemburg. He was a student of hers before the First World War and a co-founder of the German Communist Party in 1918- 19. After his expulsion from the Communist Party in 1928, and incarceration in a Nazi concentration camp in 1933, Froelich wrote his biography in exile in Paris. It was published in 1940 in French and English, and later translated into many languages. Frölich died in Frankfurt in 1953.

Elzbieta Ettinger (1925- 2005)

Author of a biography and a collection of Rosa Luxemburg’s letters to her long-term partner Leo Jogiches. Ettinger was born in Warsaw and was a survivor of the Warsaw Ghetto, as well as a member of the Polish Resistance. She moved to England to study at Cambridge University in 1967, and then to the United States, where she spent the rest of her life. She was a Professor of Literature at the Massachussets Institute of Technology (M.I.T.). Ettinger died in Massachussets in 2005.

Annelies Laschitza

The leading German scholar on Rosa Luxemburg. Laschitza is the author of a popular biography and the co-editor of Luxemburg’s collected works and letters in German. She is also the co-editor of a recent collection of Luxemburg’s letters in English, and of the ongoing Complete Works of Rosa Luxemburg series. She also advised Margarethe Von Trotta on her 1968 film ‘Rosa Luxemburg’.

Peter Hudis

Hudis was the editor of a collection of Luxemburg’s works in 2004. He is also a co-editor of a collection of Luxemburg’s letters in English and the ongoing Complete Works of Rosa Luxemburg series.
